Local Support Groups

The need and timing for attending a support varies widely from individual to individual.  We have listed some local support groups that may help you through some difficult times.  If individual counseling is more your preference, contact us and we may be able to assist in matching you with a professional.

The Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, self-help support organization offering friendship and understanding to families grieving the death of a child of any age, from any cause.  There is no religious affiliation.  No individual membership fees or dues are charged, and all bereaved family members are welcome.

 

Hospice of Northeastern Illinois

Hospice of Northeastern Illinois offers a number of support groups, as well as various programs, at different locations, throughout the year.

Grief to Hope Grieving the loss of a loved one.

Ray of Hope – An on-going group for adults to learn and share about specific grief topics

Adult Loss of a Parent – Grieving the loss of a parent.

Children’s Group – For children ages 6 – 14, who have lost a loved one.

Northwest Community Healthcare Center hosts a number of programs to assist children as well as adults with the loss of a loved one.

Begin Again - Support for widows and widowers

Children's Bereavement Group (for ages 9-11) - This group affords an opportunity for the child to express grief through art work, discussion and sharing with other children who have had a loss and guidance from the Chaplain Bereavement Counselor.

H.O.P.E. (Healing Our Pain Everyday) - A seasonal, eight-week grief support group offered by the Pastoral Services of Northwest Community Healthcare to assist people of our community in coping with loss.

Rainbow Hospice’s Center for Loss and Life Passages sponsor a number of support groups, as well as private counseling, including the following:

General Grief Group - Ongoing monthly support group and short-term group for persons experiencing the loss of a loved one.

Widowed Persons Service - Volunteer one-to-one and telephone outreach to the newly widowed. Monthly brunch and dinners. Social and educational events.

Widowed Support Group - An ongoing group, which addresses the losses faced by widowed persons.

Younger Widowed Support Group - An ongoing group for younger widowed persons who have dependent children at home and/or are 50 years of age or younger.

Coping With Your Spouse’s Death - A short-term daytime group for recently widowed persons age 55 or older.

Life Transitions Group - A support group for people who, as a general rule, have been widowed one to three years.

Adult Loss of Parent Group - A short-term group for adults who are grieving the loss of a parent.Loss Of An Adult Sibling - A short-term group for siblings who are grieving the loss of an adult sibling.

Mourning Circle – A support group for younger widows men and women 65 and under. 

Mourning Light – A senior grief support group for those who have been widowed over the age of 65. 

Pieta – A support group for mothers who have lost a son or daughter.

A Time to Grieve, A Time to Heal - This is a support group for those who are hurting because of some loss in their life such as losing their spouse by death or by divorce, and also those who are hurting for other reasons.
